Car Club

The Isle of Wight Car Club is being run by Co-Wheels. It has been set up with funding secured by the council through the Developing Car Clubs in England programme. This is funded by the Department for Transport and managed by Carplus.

Co-wheels is the largest car club operator in the UK. It has car clubs in more than 60 locations, from small villages to city centres. As a social enterprise, Co-wheels puts all its profits back into the expanding community car club network. Co-wheels is the only independently-owned national car club. It provides low emission, hybrid and electric cars on a pay-as-you-go basis for organisations and communities across the UK.

The car sharing service on the Isle of Wight will give local residents, businesses and visitors access to an affordable, flexible and hassle-free transport option for getting around the island.

There are currently vehicles available at:

  • Cross Street Car Park (Cowes),
  • Quay Road Car Park (Ryde).

After joining the car club, members will receive a smartcard. The smartcard allows members to book online and have keyless access to the cars.

The cars are parked in car parks at convenient locations near transport hubs. The high specification hybrid and low emission cars can be booked for short periods, from half an hour or for days at discounted rates.

Hire is from £4.50 per hour, plus a small mileage fee.

Isle of Wight Council Executive member for economic sustainability and development, Councillor Ian Stephens, said:

"I am delighted that following the council securing Department for Transport funding to progress the car club scheme, we are now in a position to welcome Co-Wheels to the Island.

Developing and improving access to more sustainable car use is a key priority in growing our green economy and making the Island a better place to live. Car clubs can offer residents the benefits of convenience, saving money  and reduces the Island’s carbon footprint at the same time."
