What is building control?
Building control is there to make sure that new building work meets building regulations. It applies to both residential and commercial projects. The regulations cover matters such as:
- structural stability
- fire safety
- access
- facilities.
Building control will check and approve plans for proposed work and carry out inspections on site. General advice can also be provided on projects. Building regulations are different to planning permission so you should always check if you need either before starting any building work.
Building control is not responsible for compliance with building standards, that is the duty of the person carrying out the work.

Building control financial statement
Local Authorities are required by The Building (Local Authority Charges) Regulations 2010 to publish an annual financial statement relating to their Building Regulations chargeable and non-chargeable account.
The financial statement for Isle of Wight Council Building Control for the financial year 2022/23 is shown below. This statement has been approved by the Section 151 Officer for the Isle of Wight Council.
