Rough sleeping

Call 999 in an emergency if someone is at risk of being injured, if you have urgent concerns about someone’s health, or a crime is being committed.

If you are or someone you know is under the age of 18 years and rough sleeping, call Children's Services on 0300 300 0117.

Let us know about rough sleeping

If you are rough sleeping, call our housing team on 01983 823040 or complete a homelessness enquiry with us. If your enquiry is out of office hours, call 01983 821105.

Let us know about someone you’ve seen rough sleeping by reporting it to Streetlink.

Provide as much information as possible about the location where the person is rough sleeping, such as:

  • the address (town, postcode, street, and nearest building number)
  • a description of the location (such as a bench outside the supermarket or riverbank)
  • what time of day or night the person will be at the sleeping site.

Community outreach support

Two Saints (through Streetlink) provides the local outreach support for rough sleepers. They will respond to the alert within 24 hours to find the rough sleeper and offer support. The rough sleeper outreach team provides information, advice and support to access accommodation, regularly carries out welfare checks and provides encouragement to access support services for health and wellbeing.

For any other queries relating to the outreach service, email IOW.outreachreferrals@twosaints.org.uk. This is not a 24-hour emergency service.

Drop-in sessions

The Salvation Army also hosts outreach services, such as drop-in sessions and a warm place to rest and have a cup of tea.

The drop-in sessions with the Salvation Army give you specialised support if you are rough sleeping, temporarily staying at someone's house, or in emergency accommodation. This is a safe space to talk about current issues where staff support you to access local services to achieve a positive outcome.

Weekly drop-in sessions can support you with a variety of issues, including:

  • finding suitable housing options
  • applying for welfare benefits and grants
  • getting services from specialist agencies, such as health and wellbeing
  • getting debt and money advice
  • connecting with social, religious and cultural communities that may interest you
  • managing mental health issues, or alcohol and drug issues
  • finding work, training or education.

Meet at the Salvation Army Hall, Pyle Street, Newport on Fridays from 10am to 2pm.

Severe weather accommodation

We provide shelter for rough sleepers to safeguard them from severe weather. We monitor any extreme weather conditions, such as high and low temperatures, flooding, and snowfall.

During extreme weather, you don’t have to show that you’re homeless for assistance, (including access to public funds, priority need, not intentionally homeless, or local connection). However, to get this accommodation, you must:

  • agree to let us help you
  • have no shelter
  • be at risk of continuing to sleep rough during severe weather.

Anyone placed into this accommodation will be referred to an outreach worker to arrange ongoing support. When the severe weather ends, our team will provide housing advice and any longer-term accommodation options with you.

If you need this accommodation, call our housing team on 01983 823040 or complete a homelessness enquiry.

If your enquiry is out of office hours, call 01983 821105.
