Special activities and events

Noxious Newport

A talk delivered by the County Record Office at Lord Louis Library. The talk is about all things smelly, shocking and unpleasant in Victorian Newport.

  • When: Wednesday 13 March at 2pm 
  • Cost: Tickets are £3 each. We can only take cash payments. Tickets available at the library help point

Make an Easter card

  • When: Saturday 23 March
  • Cost: Free but numbers are limited, please book at Lord Louis Library

Come and help create a giant bunny collage for the children’s library (children’s craft)

  • When: Friday 5 April, drop in 2.30-3.30pm
  • Cost: Free!

Hunt the bunnies in the children’s library!

  • When: Between 2-13 April
  • Cost: Free!

Operation Geranium – Free talk (for adults)

  • When: Wednesday 10 April at 2pm. Come along and listen to Steve from Operation Geranium talk about the project. Refreshments will be available courtesy of Friends of Lord Louis Library.

Regular events and activities

Tea and Chat (for the over 60s)

If you're over 60 years old, interested in meeting new people, and having a cup of tea and a good old chat? Come down to us every other Monday, 10:30am to 12pm. See our noticeboard in the library for our session dates.

Bereavement Group

The first Tuesday of the month, 10.30am to 12pm. This group offers support and a listening ear. Pop along for a comforting cuppa and a chat. Visit the library to find out more.

Rhymetime 

Every Friday, from 10am to 10.30am and 11am to 11.30am, there is a Rhymetime for babies of all ages. Come down, sing some rhymes, have fun, and maybe make new friends too.

Saturday Fun

Drop in sessions all day 10am to 4pm. Each Saturday will have a different activity, including Lego, colouring, board games and craft. The activity times will vary each Saturday. Check with library staff to find what’s happening on each Saturday!

LEGO Club

On the first and third Tuesday of every month, 3.30pm to 4.30pm, the library holds a free LEGO club for children aged 5 years and over. There's no need to book, so just turn up.

Toddler Storytime and Duplo group

For children under 5 years, come along at 10am every Tuesday for a story, followed by Duplo play. The Duplo will stay out all day until 5pm.

Home Ed LEGO Club

For home-educated children, this LEGO club is held on the second Monday of every month. 10.30am to 11.30am. Age 5 years and over. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Dungeons and Dragons Club

Dungeons and Dragons groups are held every Saturday morning for youths 10 to 15 years old. These groups have limited numbers and you must sign up to come along. Ask us at the library to join.

Digital assistance

On the second and fourth Thursday of every month, volunteers from Age UK IW will be at the library to help with smartphone and tablets. Drop in between 10.30am and 12pm. Don't forget to bring your device.

Art group

An untutored art group meets every Thursday from 9am to 12pm in Newport Library. Places are limited, so contact the library to book or you can go onto a waiting list.

Knit and Natter

Knit and natter is a regular knitting group held in the Lord Louis Library. There are two free sessions every month held on the first Thursday of the month 10am-12pm, and the third Thursday of the month, 2pm to 4pm. Bring along your latest project. Tea, coffee and natter provided.

Reading group

The Library reading group meets once a month at the library on the first Thursday at 5.15pm. Ask at the counter or call for details.

Thursday Murder (Book) Club 

Do you love crime novels? If so why not come along to our Crime book group? Held on the last Thursday of the month, 5.30pm to 7pm. Ask at the library help desk for details.

Book sale

Withdrawn library books and other stock are on sale, on the first Saturday of the month (except for January). Come down and pick up a bargain.

Reference and music libraries

The reference section contains encyclopaedia, dictionaries and reference works on a wide range of subjects. The music library contains single copy scores of classical and popular music and tutors for a wide selection of instruments.
