Food waste collection

We collect your food waste every week. Your food waste is used to create electricity and compost through a process called anaerobic digestion.

Place food waste inside your food caddy for collection, not in your large green recycling bin or reusable sack, or your general waste black bin or reusable sack.

You can order a food caddy online or by calling 01983 823777.

To keep your food caddy clean you can line it with plastic or cornstarch bags, or newspaper.

What goes in my food caddy

  • uncooked and cooked food (including meat and meat products)
  • small meat bones, such as fish and chicken
  • teabags, tea leaves, used coffee filters and coffee grounds
  • fruit and vegetables, including skins, peelings, stones and cores
  • eggshells
  • any leftover food.

Food waste facts

Did you know that, according to the environmental charity Waste, Resources and Action Programme (WRAP), we throw away seven million tonnes of food and drink from our homes in the UK every year. The majority of which could have been eaten.

That’s a cost of £12.5bn a year. View more information from WRAP on food and waste reduction.

When you use a food caddy, your food waste is recycled and converted into electricity or fertiliser.

But it is better to avoid throwing out food that can be eaten. You’ll save money and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
